My favourite crutch is crutch 1 ( I stumbled upon this crutch when I was a small child). I have been using it all my life and perfected it once I met Lee. Now when I use crutch 1, nobody has any idea that I am even using it. I have become so good at it that when I teach it to my PWS students, they cannot tell the difference between when I use the crutch and when I do not.

June 24, 2020 at 5:24 pm #27207StuartModeratorSpeaking like a king and word linkage are my go to crutches now! But it’s awesome to have the option of them all. I feel the knowledge that I have access to them is so powerful.
June 25, 2020 at 10:38 am #27210JavierModeratorToday I’ve been speaking for 3 hours, non-stop, without appearing to have a speech problem. I’ve done this mainly by not planning my words and focusing on my voice, on trying to be expressive and pasisonate. A few times I accidentally planned a few words, but the Crutches avoided this from becoming a bad speech incident.
Who would have thought that a person who’s been stuttering for most of of his life would be able to do this?June 25, 2020 at 10:38 am #27211JavierModeratorToday I’ve been speaking for 3 hours, non-stop, without appearing to have a speech problem. I cannot believe that you speak with such eloquence now! I must say I am loving crutch 11. It makes me feel like an actual Queen and like I am centre of the stage. The most eye-opening thing happened just the other day. A colleague of mine speaks like a Queen. She pauses, uses extreme pronunciation, speaks with passion, speaks slowly. You would swear she was using crutch 11. We were in a meeting and time was running out and she picked up the speed of her speech so that we would finish in time. I immediately noticed how less impactful her speech was. She seemed less in control and her speech was not as entertaining to listen to as it normally is. It was like I was listening to a different person speaking. It truly showed me first hand what picking up the speed of your speech can do to one’s speech, especially when people are used to hearing you speak slowly. Obviously, it was a one-time thing as we were pressed for time. But keep this in mind the next time you notice yourself speeding up. Nobody wants to hear rushed speech. Even if it takes the conversation a little longer, it is better for everybody in the room! I am guilty of speaking fast as it is a 27 year (or so) habit that is deeply ingrained. But today, I will be my own speech cop!

Our crutches are made to be used every day, in real conversation and not only in the 1/10 000 times that you will be reading something out loud with 100 other people at the same time.
