This week I’ve been coaching several PWSS, and although they know how to avoid stutters, the stutter fears and stutter threats are still there. But we can get rid os those too. We just need to avoid planning words while speaking. Speaking passionately is a great way to do that. I asked several PWSS to do this in my sessions, and they admit that when they focus on that they don’t plan any of their words. It takes practice, but it really works.
The less words we plan, the less fears and hesitations we will have. Our goal has to be to reach a 0% of planned words.August 16, 2020 at 8:29 am #27586AnonymousInactiveJavier, I do not even remember what it is to plan words. I have been fluent for so long that planning words seems ludicrous to me, but I know it is what I did for over 17 years of my life.
How did I get where I am? Focusing on the crutches all day, every day. In the beginning, it is draining, because essentially, it is forming a completely new habit. I think many PWS think that this is what they will have to do for years to come, but this is simply not true, I haven’t focused on using the crutches in years, I just use them automatically now.
We need to educate our PWS that with a few weeks to months of hard work, comes a lifetime of fluency without much effort. I have not thought about my speech in years, it is something that just happens. Whether or not you are trying to self-cure, the same amount of time is passing. So why not just try it?
I have never had a PWS who did everything I asked them to and come back to tell me it is not working. The only time I have been told that “the methods do not work”, is straight before they tell me they have not done everything I have asked them to do. The methods work if you work them!

I never ever plan words in my life, but a person can still stutter even if they aren’t planning words and speaking off the cuff…..most probably don’t think of crutches. Probably our thoughts are just say it however we can and don’t think crutches. I have never thought about words as I say them….I never have planned words!!! Does that mean we don’t stutter if we don’t plan words!???? We can still stutter if we don’t plan words….at least that was my xperience before………..!!
August 31, 2020 at 8:14 am #27652JavierModeratorHi Adam,
from my experience, when I focus on my ideas (not words), on being passionate, on being more expressive, I never stutter. That’s the ultimate goal I think. To speak wthout planning our words. If we’re able to do it, and we make it a habit, we will be able to speak fluently without the need of Crutches, because they will have become second nature to us. -
