Hello everyone,
My name is Charley and I have been a member of the WSSA group for about 3-4 weeks now. I am currently a PWS, but I am diligently working on my speech in which I have been dealing with since I was about 9 years old. I consider myself more of a hesitator and a blocker more than anything. Lee’s book has been very helpful for me for while I am on the path to finally defeat my stuttering. Some days I am fluent, and other days I am not but I am working on being more consistent especially with the Crutches. I know the Crutches by heart, but when I am in a pressured situation it seems like the Crutches don’t work. As Lee said, when this happens, this means that I don’t know the Crutches well enough yet.
I will keep practicing my speech, and post my success story very soon! Then my goal is to share my story and help so many other people who were in my shoes.

You have to practice the crutches until they become second nature until you can use them without thinking about it. Like changing gears while driving a car. It takes time, patience and consistency. Before you know it, you will find yourself thinking “Hey, I just used a crutch”. Eventually, you will not even realize that you used a crutch, nor will it be something that you constantly acknowledge.
Have you thought about joining the Speech Masters Club? It is held every Saturday at 9 am New York Time. There you will find many other people who have been or who still are on the same journey as you. You can speak as much as you would like, or not at all, it is completely up to you. It is a place where you will eventually learn to love to speak. In a couple of weeks you will find it hilarious (as all of us PWSS -people who stopped stuttering have) that you ever feared to speak at all.
June 29, 2020 at 9:09 am #27247JavierModeratorHi Charley, my advice as a coach is that when you feel under pressure, before you begin speaking, think of a Crutch, and make sure you use it. I would suggest you to pick any Crutch 7-12 as a speaking style, and use any of the Crutches 1-8 for Feared First Words. If you cooncentrate 100% on doing that, there is no chance you will stutter. Your brain will be too busy with the Crutches to think on anything else, including stuttering.
June 30, 2020 at 2:06 am #27261Charley WatsonParticipantTasneem – thanks for your response! Yes I actually attended the last two speech master’s events and I was so happy that I went. It’s a bit early for a Saturday but I found that it was a very safe and welcoming space. I plan on attending the meetings every chance that I can, and my goal is to speak up and say something at the meetings. So far, I been to two of those meetings and I spoke up twice so I feel good about that.
Javier – thanks for the advice! You’re absolutely right and when I simply stop thinking about words I think my hesitations should go away.

thanks for your comments. I must say that I’ve heard you speak on the last 2 SMC meetings, and I must say that you spoke pretty good. Honestly, if I hadn’t known about your speech problems, I would have never guessed that, so congratulations! Keep on working on your speech and you’ll see that week after week, these fears will get weaker and weaker, and less and less frequent. After a while, you will realise that you might get one of those stutter threats once a month, or 2 months, or a year. And when they show up, they will be so weak, so insignificant, that it will be extremely easy for you to crush them. -
