Another thing I have noticed teachers doing in school, which was done to me, is they call on children who stutter to read aloud. Again, teachers are coming from a place of love and concern and while misplaced, they are trying to help the child.
This is also catastrophic to a child’s progress when trying to self-cure. What then, can we do? My advice is to schedule meetings with all of your child’s teachers. Explain to them that you are using “The Lovett Method” and what it entails. Ask them to never call on your child to read in class. If your child volunteers, they may let them read aloud in front of the class.
No teacher will have an issue with this as they just want what is best for the children in their class. If the teacher needs to grade your child’s speech for an assignment, ask that the teacher call the child aside after school or during lunch and not to correct their speech as they read aloud. Also, if the teacher can pretend as if she is busy doing something else while your child is reading to her/him, for example, ask them to pretend to grade papers while your child reads, this would be great. As a child, (and even now) I find that when it appears that somebody is not placing their full attention on my speech, my speech is over 50 % better! Weird, right? But I know for a fact that most PWS will agree with me on this.
What do you guys think that parents can ask teachers to do differently for their kids? Let’s educate people about this, as most teachers will try anything to help PWS, they just don’t know HOW!
